Wonderful Worthing - The Best Location on the Sussex Coast

Worthing seems to be picking up quite a lot of mainstream and national news at the moment for all the right reasons! Just down along the coast to the east Brighton and Hove shouts louder and makes more noise, but as is often the case it's the quiet ones you really need to keep an eye on!

The recent Telegraph feature is a great example, highlighting different aspects that come together to create the vibrant and exciting atmosphere in the town.

Heritage
Worthing seems to be outdoing its near neighbour right now in so many different ways. Where large stretches of Brighton's famous historical features such as the Marine Parade arches are in a dreadful state of disrepair, in Worthing heritage features are well-kept aspects of daily life.

Take the famous art-deco pier for instance. Named 'Pier of the Year' in 2019 by the National Piers Society, it's an iconic centre piece for the town's sea front. Unlike Brighton's neglected fire-ravaged West Pier and the gaudy, arcade filled Palace pier, ours is a delightful peek into the past.

As well as giving you the chance to end the original idea of an old-style pier, namely enjoying walking or sitting for a while above the sea below, there's also a fantastic high end cuisine dining experience to be found in the lovingly restored building right at the far end.

Community
Although the recent press makes a good job of listing various venues offering food, drink and artisan retail outlets, most of the pieces miss out on the real sense of community to be found in Worthing.

For instance, Coast is a cafe-come-diner right on the beach, open seven days a week from 9am-5pm. You can grab a takeaway and sit by the lapping waves or go to the nearby Beach House Park a few minutes away.

Just along from this you'll find East Beach Studios, where a row of concrete beach huts from the 1960's have been re-purposed by local artists to show off their work. It's a great example of the friendly, co-operative nature that pervades modern Worthing.

Real life
While they do a good job of capturing the vibrant, creative face of Worthing's new food and drink outlets and other features, the press stories are classic 'day tripper' pieces that miss out on the other equally important aspects of day to day life.

Many people who moved to the area do so because it's such a great place to bring up a family. Worthing has twenty two primary schools, six secondary schools, as well as independent schools and a sixth form college.

Other 'little things' really count too. In Brighton you'll find yourself paying hourly parking charges that rival those of London, whereas in Worthing you can even park for free along a large swathe of the seafront on Sundays.

Essentially any news story that lets people know there's far more to seaside living in Sussex than the brash city of Brighton and Hove is good news. However, focusing on the trendy entertainment, eating and drinking aspects of Worthing overlooks so much.
